Rob Kircher: This is another edition of Kitchen Designer and I'm here at Kitchens By Ambiance in Bonita Springs, Florida.
Jim Gerard: Good to see ya.
Rob Kircher: Good seeing you my friend.
Jim Gerard: Hey sorry, I almost blew this appointment today. LOL
Rob Kircher: You know what? I'm sorta like the last person anyone really thinks of, you know? But he and I get along so well together that it doesn't make any difference what we just talk about. We just kind of talk about things. But today we're gonna be talking about this amazing room. It still kinda blows me away that you guys can really manipulate someone's floor plan and show them...I'm going to call it "3-D" (I know it's not. You have a better term for it than I do). But really what your kitchen's going to look like. I think that's amazing.
Jim Gerard: It is three dimensional and we can color it. So if their floor... we picked a tile that's very close to the color (they're changing their flooring) and it's very close to the color that they've already chosen.
Rob Kircher: So folks, we're gonna go through that in this segment. And then the next four segments, we're actually gonna be going to a customer's home and showing how we make that transition from this to an actual kitchen.
Jim Gerard: Well, this stage here is the fun part. But prior to this we've met with them once, maybe here in the showroom. We've certainly met with them in their home where we've taken all the measurements and discuss what they like and don't like about their kitchen and talked through the process in terms of what they'd like to have in their house...bring them both in. We sit down and we go over the actual drawing, which is what we're about to look at.
Rob Kircher: In most cases are couples visual? Can they visualize things or do you have to really kind of...
Jim Gerard: Uh, no! Uh....LOL
Rob Kircher: Uh, no, no, no.
Jim Gerard: Rob, the best part of my business is every couple is different. And some of them... 50% of them are visual and sometimes neither one of them are visual. So everybody's a little different in going through this process. And of course it's a lot of money.
Rob Kircher: Are there any arguments going on between them?
Jim Gerard: Oh, all the time! Yeah. And some of them are very subtle and some of them happen right here and some of the times it happens in the lot, on the way out.
Rob Kircher: And we have a lot of entertainment value that's associated with this as well.
Jim Gerard: It's not very often the two of them are on the exact same page of what it is they both want in the kitchen and where they think the price point is getting to and things like that. The best part of the job is watching how a couple gets together on this whole process and gets to the point where they actually sign a contract. And then the real fun is when we put it in and they're both really happy.
Rob Kircher: And they're both happy about it.
Jim Gerard: This is where the two roads meet. This is where the input from the home owner and the designer have come together now. And this is where the designer is going to say, "Okay, this is what I think I heard and this is what I think you want and this is what I can put together for you."
Rob Kircher: Okay.
Jim Gerard: And then we can work through this...yes to this, no to that...and we can make changes.
Rob Kircher: So you're starting with four walls, right (essentially) and you start to actually put the kitchen together.
Jim Gerard: Correct. I mean we've got a full size wall here and a full size wall here with a doorway. And then another full size wall. And then another full size wall. And then this is a half wall. So this would be a peninsula island.
Rob Kircher: Now folks, this is actually my neighbor's kitchen and I've been in there and it looks exactly like that. I'll just tell you that. I mean it's amazing how...it's uncanny how well you can kind of zero in on that.
Jim Gerard: Now this kitchen, other than taking this wall out Rob, we had a couple of other challenges here. One, was they were very interested in taking the microwave off the wall and putting in a hood. So once you do that, then the conversation turns to, "Okay, where are we going to put the microwave?"
Rob Kircher: Yeah.
Jim Gerard: So what we did here was we put the microwave...ah let's see if we've got a slide here where we can see where we put the microwave. We put it right here on the island. Both of them are on the diminutive side and she's maybe 5' 2" or 5' 3"?
Rob Kircher: Yeah.
Jim Gerard: Anyway, when we came up with this idea, she loved the idea to put it here. It made a lot of sense to them. It's right near the sink and right near the refrigerator. So to warm up something (leftovers or whatever) right out of the refrigerator and right into the microwave. And that seemed to work out very, very well. Also in the island, we put a drawer in the island over here. She was very interested in that and we put a big double drawer below it. And so the island became very functional. Many times an island will have an overhang on it. In this case, it has a very minimal overhang because it's a functional island and there's not a ton of room in there for it. But certainly enough room for the island. But there was no need for a large overhang.
Rob Kircher: They're not gonna be sliding any stools under there or anything like that so...
Jim Gerard: Correct no seating there. The seating will be over here.
Rob Kircher: Now, I'm curious...probably jumping the gun here. But did they put a quartz countertop in or did they put granite? What did they do?
Jim Gerard: They went with quartz, didn't they? It's your neighbor! LOL
Rob Kircher: They did. I was just going to help you lead into this. LOL. But yeah, yeah they did by the way. And by the way, it is very beautiful. I love this one.
Jim Gerard: Just seeing if you're paying attention. Yeah. They went with quartz. Now they had a little desk area over here that they wanted to keep. In many homes now we're taking that away because a lot of people have wireless and so on. But that's their central hub where they pay all their bills. They liked that. We kept that. We moved a pantry over into the corner...
Rob Kircher: Which I think is a great idea...
Jim Gerard: over here.
Rob Kircher: Great idea.
Jim Gerard: And they liked that idea and that's a three inch bump up from the other cabinets. So then once we crown that, it gives it...if you play chess, it's kind of like the rook in the corner. It kinda...the rook kinda stands up here.
Rob Kircher: Well it gives it a sense of prominence and stability in the corner. I like that.
Jim Gerard: Now another thing we can do at this stage Rob, while we're sitting here with the client, is we can talk through, as you see over on this wall, we've got a three drawer bank, a three drawer bank, and a three drawer bank. That's how we came up with it based on the in-home conversation.
Rob Kircher: So they wanted a drawer in the doors basically. Right?
Jim Gerard: Right. Well maybe we misheard that. Or maybe now that she looks at it, she wants to change that. That's not a problem. All we have to do is make a notation. And in our next revision, we can change this cabinet to a drawer and two doors. We could change this to two drawers above and then doors below with rollout trays in it. There are a lot of different cabinet combinations that we can offer.
Rob Kircher: Now in your showroom, of course, you've got examples of all these different kinds of drawers and the kinds of things that they can do, which are helpful. So they can actually walk around and see how it applies essentially to this overall design, right?
Jim Gerard: Rob, the way I look at is about anybody can pull up in your driveway with a couple of doors in the back seat and say, "Do you want your kitchen like this?"
Rob Kircher: Tell you what I'm gonna do... LOL
Jim Gerard: But in my opinion there's just a lot more to it and that's why we spend the money and we put our best foot forward in trying to show you...or give you an opportunity to come in and feel it, touch it, operate it, open and close it. To me, all that is very important. And you need to come in and be able to experience the cabinet line. Not just look at one door.
Rob Kircher: You're going to meet these happy homeowners shortly because this is our fourth episode. So episode five, six, seven and eight will all be dealing with these homeowners. And we're going to be going into their kitchen and actually seeing this thing upfront and live, if you will. And also getting their comments. And we're gonna have some of the neighbors coming over and talking about how much they like it as well.
